The Need

What Need Is BOOST Addressing?

There is a rising concern and awareness across the United States, in South Carolina, and in Greenville County surrounding the student achievement and opportunity gap and where that gap exists. Children from low-income families are less likely to participate in safe, quality afterschool activities than children from higher income families, causing children who may already be struggling to keep up academically to fall even further behind their peers.

The Facts

The facts show alarming trends across our nation, our state, and our county. According to research, many children are being left behind when the school day ends.

  • In communities across the United States, 1 in 5 children do not have someone to care for them after school.
  • In South Carolina, 18% of school-age children are unsupervised after school, putting them at risk for being in danger or getting into trouble.
  • In Greenville County, 1 in 4 children lives in poverty and 1 in 5 will not graduate from high school.

The need in our surrounding communities is too great to ignore. Children need quality learning time outside of the regular school day, or they may fall subject to the achievement gap. As an intermediary in a larger community network, BOOST recognizes the importance of making high-quality, expanded learning programs accessible to all students of all backgrounds in order to help bridge the gap.
